Wòlô bòskô

Wòlô bòskô

The Kashubian language is a complete rarity in classical music. It is used in the song cycle Wolo Bosko for baritone and piano by contemporary composer Łukasz Godyla. The selection of texts and melodies of traditional Kashubian songs on which the piece is based was made by singer Damian Wilma, who comes from the region and is fascinated by its culture.

The series is arranged into a coherent story about the unhappy love between Hanushka and Jasiek. The young couple meet by chance by a stream and immediately fall in love. Love blossoms, the boy asks Hanuszka's parents for permission to marry him, and they seemingly agree, although they postpone the ceremony due to the bride's young age. Soon afterwards, Jaśko hears about announcements of Hanuszko's engagement to another man. The young man arrives at the church for the wedding, his beloved explains her decision by divine decrees, which cannot be opposed. Jaśko is unable to live without Hanuszka and throws himself into the sea. She, seeing a dead body in the water, also decides to take her own life. The lovers are buried in separate graves, but the strength of their love makes them grow intertwining lilies. They are cut down by Hanuska's angry mother, who persecutes the lovers even after death. Unexpectedly, blood flows from the stems.
