Tracing Warsaw's prostitution - a guided walk

Tracing Warsaw's prostitution - a guided walk

The world's oldest profession exists in all cultures and its roots go back to ancient times. Brothels have existed in Warsaw for centuries and could be found in the immediate vicinity of churches, schools or monasteries.
You are invited to a walk dedicated to the theme of the world's oldest profession, during which we will learn:
- What were fish bladders?
- Who supervised the brothels?
- How were venereal diseases treated in the past?
- Where was the castellan's tabernacle located?
- Who visited brothels in a red wig?
- Who taxed prostitutes in 18th Warsaw?
- How were light-hearted women punished in the past?
- What were the ladies of light in the past called?
- Why were underpants considered a cursed item of clothing?
- Where did the gentlemen who preferred gentlemen take care of their needs?
- Where did the red light come from in public houses?
- How were unwanted pregnancies protected before the war?
- Who rode Warsaw on horseback in the daylight stripped bare?
Who ran the most decent brothel and made donations to the church?
Which street is said to have been a basin of Warsaw erotic tourism?
- What perfumes as an erotic lure were usually chosen by prostitutes?
and many more...
We meet on Thursday, 1 May 2025, at 7pm at Teatralny Square, at the junction with Wierzbowa Street at the monument to Wojciech Boguslawski. The walk is scheduled to last approximately 1.5h.
There is no charge for taking part in the walk, however, if you feel that the guide deserves a tip (...)
The walk will be led by a Warsaw Notebook city guide.
