Tosca

"In the field of love, the desire for suicide appears frequently: it is triggered by anything," wrote Roland Barthes. In Tosca, suicide is committed by the one who has loved, once she knows that she has killed her tormentor but failed to save her beloved. The double death is the finale of a love caught up in the cogs of politics. Singer and painter, love and crime - this dark classic about a woman in love who becomes involved in a dangerous game with the authorities never ceases to stir up great emotions. Since its premiere at Rome's Teatro Constanzi in 1900, it has enticed successive directors. Who will the heroine turn out to be today, ready to bargain with death for the life of her beloved? And who will Barbara Wysocka, the director who won over audiences in 2009 with her bravura production of The Holocaust at the House of Usher, which was awarded the Polityka's Passport, hear in her role? As we wait in suspense for Tosca's inevitable death, we are confronted with the remains of a world that is moving in its topicality.
