Premiere performance
"La Clemenza di Tito", in my interpretation, is a story about Man, deepened on a psychological and metaphysical level, and about his complex, delicate nature. Tito appears not only as an Emperor, but as a human being, a fallible human being with critical insight into himself. The axis of the opera is the trio Vitellia, Sesto, Tito, where Sesto is the centre of the conflict. The relationships linking this trio are ambiguous, and their backdrop is the violent, ruthless world of ancient Rome. Ancient? The strength of Shakespeare's dramas, Dostoevsky's literature or great operatic works lies in their universalism. It is true that we have aeroplanes, the internet, the rapid flow of information, we have flown into space, artificial intelligence is improving decision-making processes, but man has not changed. The urges and passions to which we are subject as human beings do not change. Only the antecedents have changed and the means of manipulation have become more camouflaged and sophisticated.
The opera's libretto is a starting point to reflect on our spiritual and psychological condition in the modern world. Through this vivisection, I have the chance to get closer to this delicate and tender place that is not subject to any definition.
