Join us for a wonderful tour along the 'King's' trail.
The series The King, filmed on the basis of Szczepan Twardoch's novel, continues to be popular. The pre-war Warsaw shown through the eyes of Twardoch can hardly be described as the Paris of the North. It is a corrupt, dirty, poor and violent city. Was it really like that?
We will try to answer this and many other questions during our evening trip along the trail of dark Warsaw. We will look for places that appear in Twardoch's book and talk about its characters in the context of authentic figures of the criminal world of years gone by.
How much did Tasiemek's Dad have in common with the TV series Kum Kaplica? Who was Pantaleon Karpinski? Where was the famous Kercelak located? Did the boxer Jakub Szapiro have an equivalent in the real world? Where was Sobensky's famous pastry shop located? Who was Ryfka Kij? What does Dr Łokietek have in common with the bookish Radziwiłł? These are just some of the questions that will be answered during the tour.
We will also tell you what the criminal world of the old capital was like in general and what rules it followed. You will learn a whole lot of shady stories and find out interesting things about people you certainly wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. Together, we will look for places that witnessed events that were the talk of the whole of Warsaw. We will give you a completely different perspective on this seemingly familiar city. You will also learn the answers to the following questions:
- who were the grandees, shoopers, lipkers or keyboarders?
- what did the hoarders, potokars, spider-men or valley-men do?
- who stole the interior minister's wallet and how?
- Who were the mamzeles and who were the shawls and what distinguished them from the hatters?
- why is a necktie in the hands of a prostitute a particularly dangerous tool?
- Was there any human trafficking in former Warsaw?
- Who was the famous Doctor Elbow and did he have a connection to the disappearance of the famous general?
- can you kill for love?
- why is it not worth lying to a woman?
- Who kept their loved one's head in a jar, and who used a suitcase for a similar purpose?
- How did the notorious cashier Spitzer fall?
- why it's not worth messing with your mother-in-law?
- what was Chinese narcosis and what fragrant souvenir did the Warsaw burglars leave behind?
These are, of course, just some of the issues that will be covered during this extraordinary tour. Attention. Our tour is for adults only.
The tour will be led by Rafał Dąbrowiecki, a well-known and well-liked Warsaw guide, creator of the "Butem po Wawie" portal, and winner of the title of Varsovian of the Year 2018 and nominee for Personality of the Year 2019 in the plebiscite organised by the editors of the Polska Times.
The tour takes place every Friday at 7 p.m. Our Cucumber will be waiting for guests in front of the main entrance to the Palace of Culture and Science from Marszałkowska Street.
