MAJA KOMOROWSKA, theatre and film actress, will speak at the next meeting as part of the 'Coś do powiedzenia' series. Professor at the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy in Warsaw. In 1960 she graduated from the Faculty of Acting (Puppetry Department) of the Theatre Academy in Kraków. In 1963 she passed an extramural acting exam. She made her debut in 1960 at the Groteska Puppet and Mask Theatre in Kraków. She then belonged to the ensemble of the Theatre of 13 Rows under the direction of Jerzy Grotowski in Opole, which was transformed into the Laboratory Theatre in Wrocław in 1962. After seven years with Grotowski, she joined the company of Wrocław's Teatr Współczesny (Contemporary Theatre) and later of Teatr Polski (Polish Theatre) in Wrocław. Since 1972 she has been in the company of the Contemporary Theatre in Warsaw.
She has worked with many eminent theatre directors: Erwin Axer, Maciej Englert, Jerzy Jarocki, Helmut Kajzar, Krystyna Skuszanka, Jerzy Krasowski, Bohdan Korzeniewski, Krystian Lupa or Krzysztof Warlikowski. She played in Polish and foreign films directed by Krzysztof Zanussi, Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Tadeusz Konwicki, Edward Żebrowski and others. She has also created more than 30 significant roles in Television Theatre productions, including "Superhuman Medicine" directed by Waldemar Dzikie.
She is currently starring at the Dramatic Theatre with Adam Ference in Samuel Beckett's Happy Days, directed by Antoni Libera (premiered in 1995), and in Angels in America and Elizabeth Costello, directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski at the New Theatre.
She has been travelling to meet the public for many years. She talks about her work and the people who are important to her. She reads poems by prominent poets and excerpts from her books.
She has received many Polish and foreign awards for her outstanding acting performances, including: Gold Medal for Merit to Culture Gloria Artis, Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2011) and French insignia of Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters (2010) awarded by the French Embassy. In 2018, she was honoured with the Award of the City of Warsaw and the "Man of the Word" Award, granted by the Council of the Festival Capital of the Polish Language in Szczebrzeszyn.
Always involved in social issues. During martial law she worked in the Primate's Social Council and in the Committee for Assistance to the Interned and their Families, later in the S.O.S with Jacek Kuroń. Today she is a member of the Council of the Oncological Hospice.
