Royber Trio / concert

Royber Trio - film music.

"Dom Zły", "Róża", "Kler", "Wołyń" - these are just a few of the most famous productions of Wojciech Smarzowski, for which the soundtrack was recorded by the Gdańsk-based saxophonist and composer Mikołaj Trzaska. One of the most respected representatives of the jazz avant-garde in Poland performs with improvisers from all over the world, is a member of the Shofar trio, cooperates with the group Ślina and with the band Remont Pomp. At the same time, for more than a decade he has been composing his own music for plays and films; for his work in this field, he has received numerous awards: five nominations, two Eagles, an individual award at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia and has won the Grand Prix of the Krzysztof Komeda Film Festival three times. As he tells us about the behind-the-scenes of composing: "Working with Wojtek Smarzowski requires me to participate in the film as an actor rather than as an illustrator or commentator of events. I am not a Hollywood type of composer, my task is to follow the character and his emotional states. I try to show everything that cannot be played in front of the camera". Nikolai Trzaska's film music harmonises perfectly with the image, and when performed live, it takes on a completely new expression. During the special concert, Mikołaj Trzaska will be accompanied by the other members of the Royber Trio group (Walicki / Moretti), and the repertoire will include themes from Smarzowski's films and from Paweł Maślona's new production 'Kos'.

The concert, consisting of:
Mikołaj Trzaska - saxophone, clarinet
Olo Walicki - double bass
Macio Moretti - percussion

The musicians had the opportunity to meet a few years ago on the occasion of the reactivation of the group Łoskot. As a trio, they decided to create and perform in October 2020, when they played their first concert in Elbląg's Galeria El. The band members hardly need any introduction, as they have been "over actively" creating the national musical universe with all their intensity for years, being pillars and at the same time forefathers in their particular fields. The band's repertoire consists mainly of Trzaska's film music, although recently there have been some joint compositions by the group's members, interspersed with flowery collective improvisations. Currently, they are at the stage of creating the repertoire for their first debut album. The musicians will play their own compositions and film music that appears in the films of Wojciech Smarzowski and others.

Mikołaj Trzaska - saxophonist, bass clarinetist, composer of film music, studied fine arts. He grew up in the yass, an artistic and social movement that rebelled against the ossification of the national jazz scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Trzaska was a co-founder of the most important yass formations - the legendary Love and Łoskot. Although the yass momentum died out many years ago, he became a leading figure in the domestic improvised scene. After the yass period, he recorded several focused and muted albums with the Oles brothers. He also accompanied poets Świetlicki and Andruchowycz, and created music and literary projects with Andrzej Stasiuk. Today, he is the leader of the international trio Volumen, a member of Shofar - performing Jewish music, among others. Above all, however, he realises himself in the field of radical free jazz, cooperating with the world's greatest free improvisers, e.g. Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, Ken Vandermak, He is also a recognised composer of film music, permanently cooperating, among others, with Wojciech Smarzowski, composing music for films: The House of Evil, Rosa, Wolyn, Under the Strong Angel, Kler.

Macio Moretti is a musician, graphic artist, filmmaker and framer. He has been making music since 1991 and has given an uncountable number of concerts in many European and other countries over the last thirty years. He has performed at an equally countless number of national and international festivals. He has recorded an incalculable number of albums with a large number of bands and musicians from home and abroad. He has designed an incalculable number of album covers and posters. He has won an incalculable number of awards.
Olo Walicki - double bass player, composer, producer. Creator of the projects OW Kaszebe, The Saintbox, Zespół Cieśni i Tańca. He plays improvised music, composes for theatre performances and films. Associated with the environment of Tricity and Warsaw artists of the off scene. He realises performances and projects with dance theatres. He made his debut at the age of sixteen playing in the avant-garde group Niebieski Lotnik, with Jerzy Mazzol and Jacek Olter. He participated in the trend known as the yass scene and collaborated with its creators, Tymon Tymański, Mikołaj Trzaska, Tomasz Gwinciński. He played in Leszek Możdżer's bands for many years. Between 1996 and 2004, Walicki performed and recorded with Zbigniew Namysłowski's Quartet. He co-founded the free-jazz band Łoskot, as well as the pop-alternative Szwagierkolaska, the group Oczi Cziorne and the late line-up of the band Miłość. He took part in the recording of dozens of stylistically diverse albums. Walicki has published several of his own projects on his own label (e.g. "Metalla Pretiosa", "Olo Walicki Kaszëbë").
