Romeo and Juliet. Concert version

Romeo and Juliet. Concert version

The story of the legendary lovers of Verona has inspired many classical music composers. Pieces using the Romeo and Juliet motif were written by, among others, Hector Berlioz and Pyotr Tchaikovsky. In the 20th century, Sergei Prokofiev created a ballet based on Shakespeare, and Leonard Bernstein's musical West Side Story also recycles the well-known theme of tragic love. In the 19th century, Vincenzo Bellini was fascinated by the story of feuding families. His opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi is second only in popularity to another work, Charles Gounod's Romeo and Juliet.

The work was first performed in Paris in 1867 and was one of the greatest successes of the composer's career. The five-act libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré follows the events depicted in Shakespeare quite faithfully, with exact quotations from his drama appearing more than once.
