Mark Twain's novel The Prince and the Beggar tells the story of just such a pair - boys living in 16th century London. One is the heir to the English throne, the son of Henry VIII, Prince Edward Tudor; the other is the son of a London poverty-stricken thug, Tom Canty. By a strange coincidence, they resemble each other like two drops of water. For both boys, the life of the other is the fulfilment of their dreams, so they decide to swap roles....
In addition to their physical resemblance, the boys have another thing in common: good, love-thirsty hearts. By swapping roles, they have a unique opportunity to experience a life they have never known before, and thus learn the most valuable lesson of their entire lives so far....
It is a story that is on the one hand entertaining, but at the same time forces the viewer to reflect on himself, on what we are like, what we want... The moral is obvious. Never judge anyone by appearances. In the world of the eternal rush for money, in the world of lies, envy and jealousy, we sometimes forget that regardless of our status, we are all human beings whose hearts beat just as strongly, thirsting for happiness, goodness and love to be shared with others...
