"Once" is a 2011 American musical based on the 2007 John Carney film of the same title.
The setting of the show is Dublin and the main plot axis is the relationship that is born between the Girl (an immigrant from Eastern Europe) and the Guy (a musically talented Irishman). The strength of the show is the highly engaging, at times mesmerising music and clever lyrics. Complemented by witty yet reflective dialogues, which at times are spiced with a hint of bitterness and disappointment. The fact that all the actors on stage simultaneously act as an orchestra adds to the unusual character of this title. This is something rarely seen in musicals and at the same time a huge artistic challenge for the producers and cast of the show, requiring the artists to be prepared not only in terms of acting and vocals, but also instrumentally. However, thanks to this procedure, the songs are perfectly integrated into the action of the show.
