Monica Mariotti takes you to New York and Liberia!
My Nina is a muzodrama, a live-action concert featuring the songs of the legendary Nina Simone - a master of jazz, blues and soul, an icon of American music and one of the most talented artists of the 20th century. The creators of this event have created a fascinating, musical story about the complicated, tense life of the legendary dark-skinned artist.
Simone lived during turbulent years for the United States. She was involved in the fight for civil rights for African-Americans, became a voice of revolution and her songs often became the form through which she manifested her views.
The performance is a combination of a surprisingly arranged recital, consisting of 14 songs by Nina Simone (sung in Polish and English) from different periods of her career, and a classic monodrama, based on the artist's autobiographical story. This is an attempt not only to bring an incredibly interesting figure to a wider audience, but also to grapple with the still universal theme of discrimination or acceptance of the diversity of human nature. Instruments include piano and double bass, but also congas, balafon, djembe and mouth harmonicas. "My Nina: Mariotti sings
'Simone' features African music, jazz and committed song acting. Both the songs and the lyrics form a coherent story about the complicated life of an artist who, from her early youth until her old age, struggled with the stigma that the colour of her skin remained forever in her life.
