We invite you to the Music Salons, during which we will hear works by two representatives of the Czech school of composition, who sought their fortune overseas. Cellist Edyta Matonóg will perform.
The cello music of our southern neighbours its most recognisable example, Antonin Dvorak's Concerto in B minor, is one of the ironclad cello repertoire, performed by soloists all over the world. In this work one finds both the delight of New York, where the concerto was completed in 1894, as well as a Slavic melancholy and a brilliant display of the instrument's possibilities.
Bohuslav Martinu is another Czech émigré. His second sonata for cello and piano was written in 1941 after his move to the United States. The piece draws on vitalistic, folk rhythms, but in a modern way.
