Masterclass with Agnieszka Holland / "Europe, Europe"

The Andrzej Wajda Film Culture Centre invites you to the Luna Cinema in April and May for a unique event presenting the works of one of the most outstanding personalities of world cinema - Agnieszka Holland. Her films are distinguished by their humanistic approach and deep reflection on moral dilemmas, social inequalities and problems of identity. The opening of the review combined with a masterclass with the director and a screening of the film 'Europa, Europa' will take place on 3 April at 7 p.m. at the Luna cinema.

Agnieszka Holland tackles key contemporary themes in her films, such as the quest for freedom, truth and authenticity. In them, she combines humanism and feminism with sensitivity to social and existential issues. Her films also respond to contemporary threats, such as consumerism, the desire to achieve success at all costs, as well as fascism or awakening nationalism.

3 April (Thursday), 19:00 / Masterclass with Agnieszka Holland / Luna Cinema

The masterclass with Agnieszka Holland will be led by Karolina Pasternak, author of her biography. We will discuss the role of the filmmaker in shaping civic attitudes and the filmmaker's responsibility towards social crises. The meeting will take the form of an open dialogue with the audience and will be followed by a screening of the film Europe, Europe.

"Europa, Europa", dir. by Agnieszka Holland, France, Germany, Poland 1990, 112 min.

Salomon Perel was born into a Jewish family living in Saxony. To avoid Nazi persecution, his family moved to Poland. When the Germans occupied Polish territory, his parents sent Salomon and his brother further east. In Grodno, the boy was placed in an orphanage, where he was subjected to communist propaganda and joined the Komsomol. His life changed when he was captured by the Germans, who - paradoxically - recognised him as being of Aryan origin. To survive, Sally did everything to conceal his true identity. Unknowingly, he became a German war hero and an ardent supporter of Nazi ideology. Adopted by a Junker officer, he was rewarded with a referral to the prestigious Hitlerjugend school....

As part of the review, we will show films that will allow the audience not only to become familiar with the director's most important works, but also to gain a deeper understanding of their significance in the context of contemporary socio-political crises and man's universal aspirations for freedom, truth and authenticity. During the discussion and lecture, we will reflect on the role of socially engaged filmmakers. In a world saturated with disinformation and indifference, it is they who shed light on subjects that many would prefer to remain silent. Art, literature, film or music can become weapons - they warn of crisis, show the effects of inequality and expose the manipulations and abuses of power or corporations. But they pay a high price for this role: censorship, heckling, misunderstanding. Will their voices be enough to awaken awareness before it is too late?
