A Japanese tragedy in three acts.
Libretto: Giuseppe Giacosa, Luigi Illica.
The story of Cio-Cio-San is one of the most beautiful operas about love in Giacomo Puccini's oeuvre. And to think that the premiere of this production in 1904 at Milan's La Scala was one of the composer's most bitter life experiences. The atmosphere in the audience was hard to bear. The audience chanted: "La Bohème!!!" - accusing the author of duplicating musical passages, booed, and manifestly yawned loudly. The performance was a complete failure. Neither did the critics leave a dry thread on the composer. It was only after several changes and a staging at the Teatro Grande in Brescia that the opera was a triumph. As many as seven excerpts had to be encored, and ever since then it has been a popular item in the repertoires of opera houses all over the world.
Conductor: Patrick Fournillier.
