Meeting: Llosa, Carpentier and Rivera on Amazonas

An event to accompany the exhibition 'Shipibo-Konibo. Portraits of my blood".

The Amazon is not only a geographical and political space, but also a literary, symbolic and cultural territory eagerly explored by artists. Just before the conclusion of David Díaz's photography exhibition .'Shipibo-Konibo. Portraits from my blood' dedicated to the indigenous people of the Amazon, we invite you to a panel discussion in which we want to explore Amazonian themes in the work of prominent Latin American writers Mario Vargas Llosa, Alejo Carpentier and José Eustasio Rivera.

At the invitation of the embassies of Peru, Colombia and Cuba, acclaimed literary translators Carlos Marrodán and Tomasz Pindel will participate in the discussion. The conversation will focus on literary representations of the Amazon jungle in the works of the three great writers mentioned: "The Green House", "The Storyteller" and "The Pantaleon and the Viscountesses" by Llosa, "The Lost Steps" by Carpentier and "The Vortex" by José Eustasio Rivera - exactly 101 years after its publication and 51 years after the translation of the latter novel into Polish. The analysis of these texts will serve as a starting point for discussing the different ways in which the Amazon is imagined in literature - as a space of utopia, barbarism, redemption or damnation.

The meeting will not only be an opportunity to reflect on literature and the translation process, but also a commemorative event - we will pay tribute to Mario Vargas Llosa after his recent death, highlighting his contribution to the literary landscape of the Amazon.
