Event within the framework of the project Space and Society - History of Cities in Central and Eastern Europe, carried out in cooperation with the German Historical Institute in Warsaw.
Urban landscapes are like textures and documents, allowing us to explore the many layers of urban space, past and present. This lecture will discuss this approach with practical explorations in a number of Central and Eastern European cities.
The lecture is given by Professor Karl Schlögel.
Prof. Karl Schlögel is a lecturer and retired researcher at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). As a historian of Eastern Europe, he is a specialist in modern Russia, Stalinism, the Russian diaspora and dissident movements, and the history of Eastern European culture.
He studied philosophy, sociology, Eastern European history and Slavonic studies at the Free University of Berlin (1969-1981). He held research internships in Budapest, Oxford, Munich and Uppsala. Inspired by visits to Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union, he was active in the left-wing student movement. As part of a research scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), he studied at Moscow's M. V. Lomonosov State University (1982-1983). Upon his return, he worked as a freelance translator and author, also writing for a number of German newspapers and magazines. He was highly critical of Russian annexations and attacks on Ukrainian territory. He also condemned Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine. His books are highly acclaimed, translated into many languages and awarded (including the Leipzig Book Fair Prize for non-fiction, 2018).
Event in English with translation into Polish. The meeting takes place at the Syrena Cinema of the Warsaw Museum (entrance from Nowomiejska Street).
