Meanwhile, in Warsaw, between queues for toilet paper and efforts to get extra ration cards for meat, an adaptation of the book - especially for his wife, Kalina Jędrusik - was prepared by Stanisław Dygat. Kalina was to play the leading role. The music for the play was written by Krzysztof Komeda, and the lyrics by Agnieszka Osiecka. The world theatrical premiere of the novel - here in Warsaw's Żoliborz at the Komedia Theatre - was fast approaching. It had to be a success! And yet something went wrong...
