Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to emerge on the scene in the 1990s. Born in Berkeley, California, he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. He graduated from Harvard College in 1991 with summa cum laude honours and was accepted to Yale Law School, but postponed the start of his studies, planning to take a year off. Instead, he moved to New York, where he immediately immersed himself in the city's vibrant jazz scene. Just five months later, he won first prize in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition.
Since then, he has collaborated with a plethora of prominent jazz figures, released more than twenty albums (on Warner and Nonesuch) and regularly won top honours in the critics' and readers' polls of magazines such as DownBeat, JazzTimes, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone.
