ACADEMY OF LOCAL EXPERTS
The series of meetings organised by the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society (PTTK) and the Inter-University Branch of the PTTK is an event that brings together lovers of travel, cultures and adventure. As part of these meetings, we invite travellers to share their fascinating stories and photos from different corners of the world. The series has already featured topics related to places from different continents and ethnographic talks about specific regions of Poland.
It was in Warsaw that the first coffee house on Polish soil was established. It happened in 1724 and the Varsovians were very fond of visiting the cafés, drinking coffee, eating fancy cakes, discussing politics, holding literary meetings or simply gossiping - it was not without reason that Warsaw's cafés were known as gossip exchanges and political salons.
Joanna Jeżewska's lecture will take a closer look at the history of coffee and its links with culture and politics. We will find out who invented doughnuts and who invented ice cream, and why coffee was banned in the beginning.
