Premiere performance
Ludwik Grossman is a forgotten figure today, although in the second half of the 19th century he was not only an important composer, but also an animator of musical life. There are interesting biographical parallels between Grossman and Stanislaw Moniuszko - like his older colleague, he made a pilgrimage to Warsaw to study and came under the tutelage of August Freyer, then continued his education in Berlin. The two artists also shared an interest not only in serious but also comic opera; their first stage work, Fisherman of Palermo, was written to a text by Jan Chęciński, librettist of The Haunted Manor.
The Spirit of the Governor is the second opera in the composer's oeuvre. Following the success of the Warsaw première, the work was successfully staged on the stages of Vienna, Krakow, Pest, St Petersburg, Lviv, Graz, Cieplice and Berlin. The popularity of the composition was due less to the qualities of the libretto, a rather complicated intrigue created by Władysław Ludwik Anczyc, but to Grossman's unpretentious music.
