The play is based on the 'Fables of the Robots', and mainly on the short story 'The Friend of Automataeus'. The robot Automataeus buys himself a friend - Wuch, a thinking chip providing advice in every situation, knowing the answers to all questions, rational, infallible. Wuch is the epitome of pure rationalism and cold calculation. The story shows the clash between the cold rationalism of the Wuch and the faith against logic of the Automataeus. The willingness to fight, the belief in the impossible and the refusal to give in to statistics (which, after all, we are the ones who shape!) is Lem's definition of humanity, which is paradoxically epitomised by... the robot. It's also a story of friendship under difficult circumstances and a parable about how chances like one in a million quite often come true.
