Sculpture in Poland during the reign of King Stanislaus Augustus (1764-1795) consisted overwhelmingly of works acquired abroad, in Italy and France, or works by foreign artists working in our country.
The king's patronage was crucial to the image of this branch of art at the time, and the royal court in Warsaw was the main centre of its development. Stanislaus Augustus imported sculptors from abroad, mainly from Italy, whose activity was basically limited to the decoration of the royal residences: The Royal Castle and the summer residence in the Royal Baths Park, where there were also many sculptures that were imports from Italy and France. Although the monarch planned the establishment of an art school to educate local young people in the fine arts, with the sculpture workshop at the Royal Castle as its starting point in the field of sculpture, the king's abdication in 1795 resulted in the liquidation of both the castle's sculpture workshop and the entire sculpture centre in Warsaw, which had been developing during his reign.
