Exhibition "History of transport - by sea, land and air"

Exhibition "History of transport - by sea, land and air"

The exhibition 'History of transport - by sea, land and air' presents the global development of human movement techniques, from the dawn of time to the present day.

It consists of three independent parts, dedicated to land, water and air transport. Each of these parts maintains a chronological character, starting with the oldest means of transport and ending with contemporary devices. This means that each part will be based on its own timeline, so there will be three independent axes throughout the exhibition, in which the different issues will appear according to their historical order. In addition to the presentation of the exhibits, additional factual descriptions, interactive stands and cross-cutting, didactic displays of selected exhibits are also components of the exhibition. The narrative character of the whole is ensured by descriptions related to the individual thematic issues. Their aim is to arouse the visitor's curiosity and encourage them to delve deeper into the subject.

The main and largest part of the exhibition is devoted entirely to land transport. First, visitors can trace the development of road construction in Roman times and learn about the vehicles that travelled on them. The exhibition goes on to show the revolution in road building in the 18th century and the spread of rail transport. This has to do with the invention of the steam engine, which was initially tried unsuccessfully for use in road vehicles. However, the steam engine found its way into rail vehicles, so that rail transport began to develop strongly in the first half of the 19th century. This is clearly shown in maps, drawings and models of steam locomotives, as well as rail electric vehicles, which appeared at the end of the 19th century.

Further on, the exhibition focuses on vehicles with combustion engines. The visitor can see the oldest car in Poland from 1899. It is a Cudell with a De Dion-Bouton engine. Next to it stands an Adler from 1901 and the legendary Oldsmobile "Curved Dash", the first mass-produced automobile in automotive history. There will also be several Polish products. Among them a small Mikrus built in more than 1,700 units and a prototype Smyk, today an extremely valuable exhibit. More than 20 motorbikes that had the greatest impact on the development of unicycles are set up on a specially prepared structure. There are Polish Sokols, motorbikes by WSK, SHL and the memorable Junak with a four-stroke engine. The FIS speedway motorbike is impressive, and older visitors will be nostalgic about OSA, a Polish scooter. Foreign production is represented by brands such as BMW, Zundapp, Sunbeam or the Czech Jawa. The de Dion Bouton tricycle - a motorbike produced in 1897 - commands respect. The automotive sector is not only about old cars. Also on display will be extremely valuable accessories related to the early days of the fascination with combustion cars. Visitors will see authentic spoke wheel hub caps, vintage sound signals, a handy Polish-made vulcaniser from the inter-war period, and even a car trunk from the early 20th century, indispensable at a time when cars did not have luggage racks. In addition to the extremely interesting exhibits and unique iconography, modern touchscreen monitors are at the visitor's disposal to provide a more detailed insight into the history of transport. There are several hundred different texts describing the most important cars that drove on European roads and most of the vehicles that drove on Polish roads in the 20th century. In addition, interesting documentaries on the history of transport can be viewed at multimedia stands. The didactic models of two-stroke and four-stroke internal combustion engines, as well as a model showing the functioning of a gearbox, are of great interest, especially to the younger part of the visitors.

To the left of the main exhibition on land transport is a separate section on water transport. This sector tells the story of floating structures, from dugouts to transatlantic ships.

The showcases include models of sailing ships, steam vessels and vessels with internal combustion engines. An interactive map has been developed to meet the needs of schoolchildren, showing the most important topics related to geographical discoveries. Pupils (but also adults) can learn about the voyages of Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, Vasco da Gama and James Cook. They can also see a finely crafted model of the flagship of Columbus' first expedition, the Santa Maria.

Further on, the exhibition shows the history of the development of water transport: steam-powered ships, the first submarines and, finally, huge cruise ships.

Part of the exhibition is devoted to water rescue. A diorama showing the recovery of a sunken vessel from the bottom of the sea may be of interest. This diorama is so valuable that it was shown on the day the museum was opened in the Palace of Culture and Science in 1955. Later, the diorama deteriorated and ended up in museum storage, until finally, after more than half a century, it was restored to its original condition by our specialists. In addition to this interesting exhibit, visitors can see an authentic diver's suit, a brass and steel helmet fixed with 12 screws, and steel boots used by divers in the first half of the 20th century.

The last sector of the exhibition is dedicated to air transport. Here, models of aerostats from the 18th century, airships from the 19th century, propeller and jet aircraft and helicopters are on display. An authentic Jumo 004 aircraft engine, which was installed in the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet aircraft, will arouse interest. Next to it, piston aircraft engines from the early period of the development of aviation are presented. In the multimedia section, the visitor can learn in detail about the history of aviation, starting with the Wright brothers' 1903 "Flyer" and ending with the era of supersonic passenger aircraft.

A sector dedicated to Franciszek Żwirka holds a place of honour in the exhibition on the history of air transport. There is a small display case with memorabilia of the famous pilot, given to us by his family. His personal documents, flight logbook and some of the items standing on the desk in Żwirka's office have been preserved.

Despite the three independent parts, the whole exhibition "by sea, land and air" has a coherent character, and the narrative makes special reference to Polish themes related to the development of transport. In the multimedia part, visitors can learn about Polish successes in sports aviation, the shipbuilding industry and achievements in the production and export of Polish cars.

The exhibition is aimed at audiences of all ages, regardless of their knowledge and interests.
