The exhibition "Eve on Mary. The story of a book"

"Madame Curie" (Polish title "Marie Curie") is the best-selling biographical book in history. The new exhibition tells the story of this most famous biography of Marie Skłodowska-Curie, written by her younger daughter Eve. The book, which has been showered with awards all over the world, has so far been published in more than 80 countries. The exhibition features many foreign editions of the book, including Japanese, Brazilian and Finnish. Polish editions are also shown - the book has already been reissued 23 times in our country. 'Madame Curie' was first published in 1937 almost simultaneously in several countries. Interest in the figure of Marie Skłodowska-Curie was so great at the time that the book was first published in episodes in the press. Readers felt that they were waiting for the next parts of the engaging novel. That same year, the book was published in France and a year later in Poland. 90 years after its premiere, it is still not out of print.

Ewa Curie took great care in writing her mother's biography, and the exhibition brings us closer to the process of writing the book. Among the collections on display are Ewa Curie's unique notes and drawings, which she made during meetings with her mother's relatives in Poland. Thanks to them, we can reconstruct, for example, the scientist's Warsaw journey to school.

Part of the exhibition is devoted to the - still little known in our country - author of the biography. With a BA in science and philosophy, Ewa Curie chose a career as a model, pianist and journalist. During the Second World War, she was a war correspondent and later became active in NATO. She married the American diplomat Henry Richardson Labouisse, whom she actively supported as Director General of UNICEF. Together with him, she received the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to UNICEF in 1965. Eve Curie memorabilia on display includes a business card with her handwritten signature.

In addition, the exhibition features photographs from the collections of the Chrząstowski family, the Polish descendants of Maria's brother, Józef Skłodowski, and from the collections of the Musée Curie in Paris. A curiosity is the biographical film about Marie Skłodowska-Curie, which was filmed on the basis of the book in 1943 in the USA. Among other things, there is a leaflet promoting it.
