The Museum of Diving in Warsaw opened on 27.02.2006 on the initiative of a married couple, Karina and Grzegorz Kowalski, and members of the oldest diving club in Poland, the Warsaw Diving Club Association. The history of diving in Poland is a fascinating but not very well-known part of Polish history. Few people know about the involvement of divers brought from England to Poland on the order of King Stanislaw August to clear the Niemen River of stones, making it an alternative route to the Vistula to transport Polish goods to the sea, bypassing Gdansk. Or about the Danish, Swedish and Polish classical divers who built the port of Gdynia between the wars and then rebuilt it after the Second World War. Few people know about the heroic work of the Polish divers on the Coast, who between 1945 and 1958 cleared the harbour basins of mines, wreckage and debris and helped to rebuild not only the harbours, but also bridges, tunnels and waterworks throughout devastated Poland. It is to them that we have dedicated part of the exhibition in the museum, showing the equipment of the classic diver. Classical divers were the first to explore Lake Biskupin for archaeology in 1935, thus beginning the era of a new scientific field in Poland - underwater archaeology.

It was not until 1943, when J. Cousteau invented and marketed an underwater breathing apparatus that freed the diver from the "tether of the air duct", that "scuba divers" appeared in the world and in Poland, and diving became a sporting and recreational activity as well.

This is what you can see in our museum. We already have over 900 exhibits here. We show both classic divers' equipment from the 19th and 20th centuries and early divers' equipment that appeared in the middle of the 20th century. We have self-produced equipment based on drawings and patterns of Western equipment. Our oldest exhibit dates back to 1895.
