The Museum of Literature is pleased to present the first monographic exhibition in Europe of American artist Alexandra Grant, known for her interdisciplinary love of language, who seeks to visualise and embody literary works in her artworks.

Alexandra Grant, born in Fairview Park (Ohio), graduated in art history from Swarthmore College (Pennsylvania, 1995) and in painting and drawing from the California College of Arts and Crafts (San Francisco, 2000). She lives and works in Los Angeles and Berlin. She is a mixed media artist whose work includes painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, installation and video, as well as artist publications. Her art is characterised by an interdisciplinary fascination with language as image and embodies the written word, which fits perfectly with the nature of the exhibitions at the Museum of Literature.

Alexandra Grant has exhibited in museums and galleries around the world and her work is held in museum collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles, the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas, and in private collections. The artist enters into dialogue with the work of writers, poets, philosophers and linguists, including Sophocles, Konstandinos Kawafis, Pablo Neruda, Vania Vargas, Wislawa Szymborska, Michael Joyce, Hélène Cixous and Keanu Reeves, earning her the term 'radical collaborator'.

Grant treats literature and reading as the catalyst for his work and the intellectual basis for his entire artistic practice. Through a combination of conceptual and intuitive operations, she transforms selected texts into compositions of colour, shape and form, thereby giving them new life. The artist herself calls herself 'a writer who writes with materials'.
