The Los Angeles-based drone-pop band debuted in late 2021 with the album Mandatory Enjoyment (Trouble In Mind Records), which quickly became a hit, generating enthusiasm from listeners and reviewers alike on Pitchfork and Stereogum.
In their sound, Dummy combine crushing guitars with a heavenly atmosphere. There are numerous references to a variety of musical trends: 60s melodicism, 90s British noise pop, spiritual jazz, Japanese new age or Italian minimalism.
Dummy avoid the bleak, dark and dramatic tropes of contemporary 'art' music often found in punk, experimental and electronic music. Instead, they emphasise joyful and euphoric sonic palettes.
No artistic uniformity can be found on Dummy's debut album. The 12 tracks are characterised by constant exploration and a constantly changing approach to the compositional process. The thrillingly energetic and psychedelic-rich 'Daffodils' or 'Fissured Ceramics' alternate with the meditative soundscapes of 'X-Static Blanket', focused on sound design and studio experimentation.
In contrast to the blissful atmosphere of the instrumentals, Dummy's ironic lyrics explore 'the burden of modern life, consumerism, environmental catastrophe, alienation and other anxieties arising from living at this absurd moment in history', such as nuclear testing, ocean pollution and the psychology of commercial architecture.
Dummy's irrepressible creativity constantly pushes them forward in constantly breaking sonic boundaries and takes us into exciting and ecstatic spaces.
