A comic opera in two acts,
Original Italian language version with Polish subtitles.
Così fan tutte, full title: Così fan tutte ossia la scuola degli amanti (Thus do they all, or the school of lovers), KV 588 - opera buffa in two acts. The music was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the libretto was written by Lorenzo da Ponte.
The libretto uses the motif of the 'exchange of brides', already known since the 13th century, developed earlier by Boccaccio in The Decameron and Shakespeare in Cymbeline, and also introduces elements of the myth of Prokris as described by Ovid.
Two young officers extolled the beauty and virtue of their brides. Listening in, a Viennese aristocrat, an old sceptic, bet that he would prove to them how doubtful the fidelity of women was. Through disguises and other intrigues, the young men made their brides ready to change the object of their affections and succumb to their "new" admirers. The signing of the ready-made wedding contracts was prevented by the unexpected 'return' of the appalled young men. The bet was lost and the betrayal uncovered. What remained was the bitter truth of the old man consoling them that "that's what they all do"....
