Ariadne on Naxos is the third opera written by Richard Strauss together with librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Their collaboration began with the expressionist Elektra, two years later they created the diametrically opposed, Mozartian in spirit The Knight of the Silver Rose, while the next project grew out of literary inspiration. Strauss wrote a one-act opera intended to be staged after Molière's play The Bourgeois Nobleman, which he had just translated into German by Hofmannsthal. Today, however, the most popular version is Ariadne, with a prologue drawing a metatheatrical framework for the performance.
