As early as 1614, the court ballet 'Don Quichotte' was danced in the royal Louvre. Subsequently, motifs from Cervantes' work became a permanent feature of ballet, resulting in dozens of new adaptations over 400 years. However, Marius Petipa's ballet with music by Ludwig Minkus (1869) created a real furore, as it remains on the stages to this day, refreshed and transformed by successive generations of choreographers. Why is it so vibrant and popular? The picturesque colours of old Spain, the alluring gypsies and costumed toreadors, the erroneous knight of La Mancha, the comical Sancho Panza and the twisted Gamache can always count on success. And the main characters, Kitri and Basilio, are second to none in the classical repertoire in terms of charm, temperament and dance virtuosity. It all adds up to a thrilling revue of classical dance in Spanish style.
