Opera is the axis of Ramona Nagabczyńska's performance. In order to talk about women's voices, the choreographer refers to opera - a field of performing arts that has been staged in an almost unchanged form for centuries.
Voice is mainly associated with the symbolic sphere; with the meanings attributed to sounds. We forget that it is a manifestation of complex bodily predispositions. Those voices that escape the symbolic order are pushed outside the bracket: which does not mean that they do not exist - only that we have lost the ability to hear them. The traditional practices of women's singing have found their subjugated counterpart by opera composers in the form of virtuosic operatic arias. There, the primal ecstasy of the voice is mixed with the sophisticated propaganda of a wronged order.
The ancient Greek practice of aischyrology, involving the use of obscene language, originated in women's rituals. There is no contemporary equivalent to this practice - on the contrary: vulgarities and references to the abject side of carnality are appalling when they come out of women's mouths.
The politicity of the voice is established not only through the meanings of the spoken words, but equally through the marking of the corporeal presence of particular bodies.
