Emilian Kaminski (Director of the Kamienica Theatre) together with Piotr Wielgomas (President of Bigram S.A.) wished to evoke the pre-war spirit of the capital and initiated a project to build a mock-up depicting a fragment of Śródmieście district from August 1939 - the city just before its total destruction.
The main objective of the initiators is to promote tradition and knowledge of old Warsaw and to save from oblivion the most wonderful places of the "Paris of the North". It is noteworthy that the Kamienica Theatre was built in a building that was one of the few to survive the turbulence of the 20th century, which also prompted Emilian Kamiński to restore this part of the city, which was completely destroyed after 1939 and rebuilt in a different style.
Another assumption of the project's funders is to create an educational programme, which is ultimately intended to evoke the memory of the city's glory years, its history (its heyday, destruction and reconstruction) and to remind us of the buildings that no longer exist. The model covers the area from the Saxon Garden, with the now defunct Saxon Palace, to the Central Railway Station. Work on the reconstruction of the miniature city began in autumn 2012. The mock-up was built in stages on the basis of archival photographs, aerial plans, maps, postcards and written memories. Technically, the construction of the mock-up consists of three segments. The first segment depicts the Saski Palace with a fragment of the garden, Kronenberg Palace, Małachowskiego Square with the Zachęta building and the Holy Trinity Church. The second segment features tenement houses between Królewska and Kredytowa Streets. The last segment shows the area around Szkolna and Marszałkowska Streets.
