This fascinating journey through time is possible thanks to the untiring efforts of many generations of researchers and the development of geological sciences in the last decades of the previous and the present century. Modern methods of studying various types of rocks, which are evidence of past phenomena and processes, make it possible to learn more and more precisely about the structure and geological history of various regions of the Earth. Knowledge of these regions makes it possible to reconstruct, as if from a jigsaw puzzle, an intriguing picture of our planet in individual geological periods. This picture, in accordance with the current state of knowledge, is presented on palaeogeographic maps, digital screens and charts with reconstructions of organisms that lived in the distant past. These make it possible to observe and analyse the changes that took place in the distribution of land and oceans, in the development of plants and animals, and to take a fascinating journey through worlds that have passed irretrievably. The history of life on Earth has been reconstructed thanks to the remains and traces of organisms that have undergone fossilisation, that is, processes of physical and chemical transformation in rocks. The processes leading to the formation of the different types of fossils are explained and illustrated with appropriate exhibits. Of the traces of life presented in the exhibition, the oldest are the biosedimentary structures formed, some 2.4 billion years ago, as a result of the life processes of cyanobacteria. Other fossils made available to visitors illustrate the evolution of organisms, leading to today's plant and animal forms. Particularly noteworthy are the mollusc shells, in an exceptional state of preservation, from the now inaccessible Middle Jurassic black clay site at Łuków.
