Sacred and profane" exhibition

The museum collection consists of an impressive collection of liturgical textiles, goldsmithing, sculpture, paintings, drawings and prints. Particularly noteworthy are Albrecht Dürer's woodcuts from 1498-1511 ("Apocalypse", "The Life of Mary" and "Passion".), co-bound in one book. The highlight of the early painting collection is the "Bow of the Shepherds" from 1575 by the Italian painter Francesco Bassano. Polish painting is represented by Matejko, Rustem, Simmler, Wyspiański, Pankiewicz, Malczewski, Vlastimil Hoffmann, among others. A separate place in the collection is occupied by Polish contemporary painting, especially independent art from the 1980s, including works by émigré artists (Józef Czapski, Jan Lebenstein, Adam Kossowski).

As far as Gothic sculpture is concerned, the most notable works are the excellent Beautiful Madonna and Child from the workshop of Hans Multscher (3rd quarter of the 15th century) and the early 15th century statue of Christ with movable arms, intended for Easter passion rites - one of the few objects of its kind in Poland. The sculpture from the early 20th century is represented by Antoni Madeyski and Henryk Kuna, and from the post-war period by Alfons Karny.Among the liturgical vestments a significant place is occupied by chasubles made from kontusz belts and baroque chasubles with artistic figural embroidery. An Italian-made chasuble from the foundation of Queen Cecilia Renata, wife of King Władysław IV (1644), should not be overlooked either. In the goldsmith's collection it is worth noting the late medieval tower monstrances from the early 16th century and the 18th century radial monstrances with figural decoration in a rich iconographic programme, and above all the impressive set of liturgical vessels (chalice, ampullae and tray) decorated with enamel with scenes from the Passion by the Augsburg goldsmith Michael Muir (ca. 1700). The museum also boasts an extensive collection of clocks, comprising free-standing clocks from London and Dutch and Gdansk studios, as well as an interesting collection of mantel clocks and tile clocks.
