Exhibition at the Fryderyk Chopin Museum

A visit to the Fryderyk Chopin Museum is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the Romantic era and learn about the life and work of Poland's greatest artist. The special atmosphere of the exhibition, affecting the imagination and the senses, results from the careful combination of historical exhibits, music, scents, interactive elements and design.

The permanent exhibition is housed on three levels of the Gninsky Palace, divided into three themes synthesising the life and artistic activity of Fryderyk Chopin:

Level 0: Warsaw period
Level 1: Paris period
Level -1: The works and pianism of Fryderyk Chopin

The most valuable of the exhibits - musical manuscripts and letters by the composer - are presented on a rotating basis as part of curatorial displays. One of the most important mementoes of Chopin is a Pleyel grand piano belonging to the composer in the last years of his life, exhibited in the Paris Room. Also worthy of special attention are 19th-century depictions of the composer, including a portrait by Teofil Kwiatkowski and a bronze bust by Jean-Baptiste Clesinger. Other exhibits popular with visitors include a gold watch given to Chopin in 1820 by the singer Angelika Catalani, a calendar and pencil belonging to the composer, and a cast of Chopin's left hand.
Most of the space, especially the Composer's Room, features the music of Fryderyk Chopin in recordings made by the most eminent pianists on pianos from the composer's day (recordings from the series 'The Real Chopin', published by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute). The exhibition is complemented by multimedia screens.

Visitors to the Chopin Museum are free to choose the route of their visit. In the individual halls, exhibition animators await visitors, who will provide additional information about the exhibition scenario and its assumptions.

The exhibition is set in the historic interiors of the Gniński Palace, rebuilt after World War II according to the original plans of Tylman von Gameren. According to a famous Warsaw legend, the enchanted Golden Duck once resided here.

The exhibition layout was designed by the Italian architectural studio Migliore+Servetto, according to a scenario created by the team of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute (opening: 2010). In April 2023, a new version of the exhibition was prepared on Level 1 (rooms Paris, Social Circle, Chopin on the Move), according to a design by Karolina Fandrejewska. The new arrangement allowed for the display of more original objects, including new acquisitions to the Museum's collection.
