Explore the extraordinary world of urban animals. See species you encounter every day and specimens you wouldn't even guess exist. Wild birds and mammals are presented in natural-looking exhibits and large-format photographs.
What will we see at the exhibition?
Although cities are made for people, they are also home to many wild species that have been able to find suitable living conditions here. Some of these we encounter on a daily basis, while others we do not even realise exist. Some animals live in urban parks and trees, others in attics and roofs and in cellars. Species that are fairly easy to observe are often mistaken for other fauna, or we fail to name them.
The exhibition 'City of Animals' shows selected birds and mammals living in Polish cities on the example of Warsaw. These are individuals living in areas absorbed by expanding metropolises and benefiting from the conditions created by urban development. Nearly 50 taxidermy exhibits will be on display in three arranged zones, such as: forests and city parks, a river (the Vistula) and the city centre. The whole will be complemented by large-format photographs and charts with texts on animals and their role in the city. We will learn, among other things, why the view that humans dominate urban areas is only partly correct. We will also find out that even small patches of greenery are important for species diversity and for improving the quality of life of city dwellers.
The exhibits on display come from the collections of the Royal Łazienki Museum - a branch of the Museum of Hunting and Riding, the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, the Institute of Forestry Sciences and the Independent Department of Forest Zoology and Hunting. The SGGW is a partner of the exhibition.
