Gamechanger
"Before setting out, it is important to assemble a team". This phrase, delivered in the charismatic voice of Piotr Fronczewski, is iconic for many older gamers. Spending long hours in the world of Baldur's, Gate one of the first expansive role-playing games (RPGs), you may have heard it many times.
The strength of role-playing games lies in the unique universes in which they are set. Game worlds are expanding into multiverses and new lands are constantly being created. Their inspiration comes from mythology, literature (e.g. the works of J.R.R. Tolkien), films (e.g. Star Wars), and sometimes it is the other way around - it is games that come first and other pop culture goods are based on them (e.g. the Fallout series).
What is the phenomenon of role-playing games? What is world building and why is it of interest to researchers? What qualities should a fictional world have to be fascinating, immersive and - in its own way - realistic, even including elements of magic?
This is what we will be discussing at the December Evening.
