Timeless Film Festival Warsaw was created to put the classics of cinema back into motion, which in recent years have been relegated to home screenings on the one hand, and on the other have begun to regain their former lustre. More and more female and male viewers are not only looking to the future of cinema, on the lookout for the next enlightenment, but are also reaching back to find something fascinating in cinema's rich past. The classics of cinema are thus not just a relic of the past, but are actively shaping the tastes of cinephiles and cinephiles alike.
Timeless FFW offers a fresh perspective on the history of cinema, rarely present in the public debate, combining a careful curatorial selection with an authorial story about the films and filmmakers, presented by the organisers: film scholars, critics, cultural animators. The idea behind the festival is to rediscover the classics in two senses: to show digitally restored films (from high-quality copies) that Polish audiences may be familiar with, but have not seen on the big screen, and to introduce new classics to the Polish cultural circuit, i.e. films and artists that have not had a chance to appear in the Polish consciousness, but are important protagonists in the global conversation about cinema.
The classics, however, are not just a history of masterpieces. Timeless FFW combines fire and water: it presents the canon and questions it, showcases prestigious films and negotiates a place for new filmmakers, and connects American cinema with world art cinema.
The festival programme will include retrospectives of outstanding filmmakers and filmmakers from the world and Poland, documentaries about cinema, a rich representation of genres, surprising juxtapositions of films and phenomena, sections devoted to avant-garde artists and those who and which are involved in animation.
