Guided walk around the Warsaw Citadel

Guided walk around the Warsaw Citadel

"If you persist in your dreams of a separate nationhood, of an independent Poland, and in all these illusions, you will bring upon yourselves great misfortune. I have had the Aleksandrov Citadel built here, and I declare to you that at the slightest disturbance I will have the city bombed, I will demolish Warsaw, and I will certainly not rebuild it."
The Warsaw Citadel, known as the 'Aleksandrow Fortress', was built by decision of Tsar Nicholas I as repression for the outbreak of the November Uprising. Situated on a high bank above the Vistula River, it bears witness to the struggles and suffering of the Polish nation during the partition period.
I invite you to take a walk in the picturesque surroundings of the Warsaw Citadel.
Spotykamy się w sobotę, 3 maja 2025 r. o godz. 14:00 na Parkingu przed Muzeum Katyńskim (ul. Jana Jeziorańskiego 4). Spacer przewidziany jest na ok. 2h.
During the walk we will learn:
- Where do we find 'Bald Mountain' and what did it have to offer?
- Where was the last spiritual service given before execution?
- Who looked death in the eye and died happy?
- What is the postern, what was it used for and where do we find the entrance to it?
- Who got rich from the construction of the Citadel?
- To whom do we owe the blocks of flats on Krajewski Street?
- How long is the Carnot wall and what was it used for?
- What was the caponier used for and what use did it find?
- Where can we find the remains of the old gallows where the heroes of the time were hanged?
- Where can we find the remains of the River Drna?
- What did Favors look like in the past and what remains of the former Piarist Convent?
- Which Warsaw Insurgent was born in the 10th Pavilion?
- Who identified the site of the Warsaw Citadel?
- Where did the announcement of the creation of the Independent Polish State come from?
- Which way were the condemned led to the place of execution?
- Which exit did the Poles take "for the last time"?
- How were executions carried out during the Russian partition?
- Where do we find the location of the 'bad fame'?
- What are we 'unconsciously' not paying attention to?
- What does the Mikhailov Gate look like from the inside?
- What was a cannonball and which gate does not have one?
- Which of the gates had a communicative function with the city?
- Where can we find a small outdoor art gallery?
- What do the kids call the 'willow temple'?
- What happened near the Railway Bridge?
- What was the 'ABC alphabet' and what was the name of the X Pavilion torturer?
and many more...
There is no charge for taking part in the walk, however, if you feel that the guide deserves a tip (...)
The walk will be led by a Warsaw Notebook city guide.
