"I thought I was looking at a modern day version of Arta Tatum - he's just an amazing talent." - Herbie Hancock
Winner of the 2023 Herbie Hancock Jazz Institute International Piano Competition, Jahari Stampley discovered his love for the piano at the age of 14. He quickly honed his skills, gaining recognition in various competitions.
Jahari has toured with Stanley Clarke and appeared on Derrick Hodge's album 'Color of Noise'. He has played at renowned venues such as Radio City Music Hall and Carnegie Hall. Before winning the competition, he released the album Still Listening, which reached number one on Apple iTunes in the first few weeks after its release. Still Listening brings together Stampley's wide-ranging inspirations - from church music to electronica to the avant-garde.
"By the time he's passed the quarter-century mark - when many musicians are just picking up their degrees and looking to fit into an established artistic narrative - Stampley is breaking the jazz norms and musical expectations of his generation. He plays from the heart, and you can feel the depth in the sounds he delivers." - Ulysses Owens Jr.
