The starting point of Languages of the Future is the myth of the Tower of Babel. The play rewrites this myth, speculating about what might remain of communication between people in the future.
The performance also draws on the 1982 futuristic porn film Cafe Flesh, in which, as a result of a nuclear explosion, most of humanity loses its sex drive, while the few who retain it perform sexual acts on a specially arranged stage, in front of a fascinated audience.
Understanding language as a practice of constantly negotiating difference, the performance looks at analogue technologies of communication, such as touch and speech. Intimacy - the pleasure and discomfort derived from proximity - is on display here. It functions as language goes out of use, becoming a relic of the past in a very fast-paced digital culture.
What forms of embodied communication do we need today? Who does and who does not have the right to speak their own language? Can we trust our collective senses before we submit to the authority of knowledge and power?
