The exhibition "The world according to Jeremiah 2"

The exhibition "The world according to Jeremiah 2"

The exhibition 'The World According to Jeremiah 2' presented at the Mediatheque includes three series of works: Cities of the World launched in 2013 and the two most recent series, namely Planet Africa and Direction India.

Jeremiah's most recent works have travelled a considerable formal and stylistic path, from perfect architectural structures, historical buildings, to India and Africa. There have been portraits of proud inhabitants of the continent in folk costumes, as well as ordinary street people performing everyday activities. Among these works, the most valuable seem to be the portraits of women and children, whose lives and fate most inspire Jeremiah's current work.

This is how Professor Marian Stępak writes about the art of Jeremiah Popiel:

SAPER VEDERE

"Art is an ideal way to express one's emotions, thoughts and experiences, even when it may be difficult to express in words. I took the title of the text from Leonardo da Vinci's statement that to be able to 'look' is the greatest gift for an artist. I believe that Jeremiasz Popiel possesses this gift and is also able to evaluate, objectively filtering the observed reality. Following Leonardo, who distinguished three classes of people, he placed in the first row those who see, that is, are able to perceive reality in a broader sense. This is how I perceive Jeremiah's art, looking both at what I have seen before, but above all admiring his latest works, which are a creative phenomenon. In fact, each of the artist's most recent paintings confirms my fascination, but I will only point out a few. "Children Among the Banana Leaves" from the 2023 series "Children of the Planet" is, in my opinion, an outstanding work, being a coloured drawing or painting with an undercurrent of rich linear layers. However, what strikes me about it is the extraordinary evocativeness of the rendering of individual matter with many simplifications, which is an added artistic value. Through colour and a softly guided line, the author has conveyed the saturation of nature, and through the use of angular black with a tinge of umber, he has evocatively delineated parts of the bruised and brittle bush. On top of this, the main character is depicted as sinking into the soft ground, treading on uncertain ground. Another masterpiece is 'One World', also from 2023. It is a depiction of a dozen different personality types, situated dynamically, bravuraly characterised with linear lightness, anatomical correctness, and given individual facial features. Works such as 'Our Planet', 'Children', or 'School in Zanzibar' and 'Planet of Women' were executed similarly, although not in the same colour scheme. I consider Jeremiah Popiel to be a great observer of the world, even though he largely travels the world through albums, magazines, postcards, remembered frames from films, paintings, but also places he has been to. The great strength of his work is its spatiality. The depth of the images is astounding, and can be compared to the greatest classics of modern times, who deal with similar subject matter and mode of creation. I am not afraid to make such a statement, as I see a brilliant ability to capture perspective, not only convergent, but also aerial, intentional - which is a great strength of the artist's work. Added to this is the richness of the colours used and the build-up of an elaborate scale of linearity, often building up the strategy of individual works. It all started with the line, because that's what I was captivated by years ago."

Jeremiah Popiel, 28-year-old artist. Drawings and paintings are his peculiar, most developed mode of communication: the language of the image has become the artist's primary language.

Katarzyna Trzeczkowska writes of Jeremiah Popiel's workshop as follows: "With a distance from our world, allowing him to see what for us is hidden under a layer of our knowledge, experience or emotions."

The Yes Like You inclusive festival is a series of events aimed at integrating residents with people with special needs. The festival breaks down barriers: able-bodied people overcome their fears and insecurities, learn to be with people with disabilities and, in turn, they can feel like non-disabled residents of the city and gain the courage to use the city's resources themselves.
