Zbigniew Dłubak (1921-2005) went down in history as one of the architects of modern visual sensibility in post-war Poland. A painter and theoretician, co-founder of the legendary Permafo group, he was distinguished by his bold, experimental approach to photography. He treated it as a tool for investigating the mechanisms of sign creation and perception. The exhibition at the Studio Gallery - held in collaboration with the Archeology of Photography Foundation - not only attempts to recall Dlubak's iconic works, but also to present them in the context of sound art. The exhibition features his original vintage prints (period prints) and paintings on canvas, including works from the Studio Gallery collection. They are accompanied by an audio composition recorded in Dlubak's former flat in Warsaw by Anna Zaradny (b. 1977), an artist and composer whose work organically weaves together the areas of visual arts and experimental sound. The composition was prepared especially for the exhibition. Anna Zaradny in Dłubak's flat, undertook an analysis of the sonic aspect of this space. Using various strategies, including field recordings and a melorecitation based on the artist's theoretical texts, Zaradny shows that the idea of the studio can be reread as a place for the production of successive layers of interpretation.
The term contained in the exhibition's title - non finito - refers to the tradition of Renaissance works left intentionally unfinished. We use this term to signal the openness of Dłubak's oeuvre to further interpretations and contexts, which can constantly complement the meaning of his actions. Processuality and performativity are elements that unite the stance of both artists. Dlubak's photographs, enveloped by Zaradny's immaterial sonic realisation, become part of an immersive experience: the sound installation is organically woven into the fabric of the gallery, allowing the works to resonate with diverse audiences. The exhibition also includes other works by Anna Zaradna, video compositions, objects and installation, co-creating a narrative of permeation and dialogue.
