And we have what we wanted
DKF Berlin Factor
As part of the Film Discussion Club "Berlin Factor" and in cooperation with the Slovak Institute in Warsaw, we have prepared a unique open-air screening for you - together we will see the 2023 Slovak production "No and we got what we wanted", directed by Michal Kunes Kováč.
On the last night of Czechoslovakia, New Year's Eve 1992, a multi-generational family meets in Banská Bystrica to baptise the youngest member of the family. However, instead of celebration, the family reunion turns into a dramatic confrontation with the past - Peter, a newlywed father, discovers that his own parent was an agent of the communist secret police...
Director - Michal Kunes Kováč, born in Prešov in 1987, is a filmmaker with an extremely colourful artistic path - from cinematographer and music video author to graduate of the prestigious Prague FAMU. "And there we have it, what we wanted" is his feature-length debut. which won critical acclaim for its bold approach to the theme of settling accounts with the past and for its excellent acting performances (the cast includes Eva Holubová, Bolek Polívka and Anna Šišková). The film balances between drama and black comedy, showing how political history permeates private life.
The director is known for his ability to combine personal experience with a wider social context, and his style is characterised by visual precision and emotional honesty. Kováč's film fits perfectly into the broader context of Slovak cinema, with filmmakers such as Martin Šulík, Tereza Nvotová and Ivan Ostrochovský tackling themes of national identity, historical memory and social change, often from the perspective of an individual caught up in larger processes.
"So there we have it, what we wanted" is an example of cinema that is not afraid to ask difficult questions about guilt, loyalty and family heritage - while doing so with irony and distance.
