Australian hard rock band formed in Sydney in 1973 by brothers Angus and Malcolm Young. Among other things, the band is recognised as a pioneer of hard rock music. The band members, nevertheless, have always classified their music as rock & roll.
Prior to the release of their first album High Voltage in 1975, AC/DC changed their line-up a couple of times. The group's line-up became more settled from 1977 onwards after bassist Cliff Williams joined the band, replacing Mark Evans.
In 1979, the band recorded one of their most popular albums Highway to Hell, which is also the last recorded with singer and co-writer Bon Scott, who died on 19 February 1980 after a night of heavy drinking. The band members considered disbanding the group, but decided to continue making music and chose Brian Johnson as Scott's successor. That same year, the band recorded their best-selling album, Back in Black. For Those About to Rock We Salute You, released a year later, was also highly successful and became the band's first album to reach No. 1 on the US national chart. In 1983, AC/DC fired long-time drummer Phil Rudd and selected Simon Wright as his replacement.
During the 1980s, AC/DC's popularity declined, but the band's albums consistently ranked in the top 40 albums in the US. In 1990, the group's popularity rose again with their album The Razor's Edge, which reached #2 in the US. Phil Rudd rejoined the band in 1994 and since then the line-up of the group has only changed once, when Malcolm Young developed dementia in 2014 and Stevie Young took his place.
To date, AC/DC has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, including more than 69 million in the US alone. Back in Black has sold more than 49 million copies, including more than 22 million in the US, making it the third best-selling album in history and the second (after 'Dark Side of the Moon') best-selling album by any band. AC/DC is ranked #4 on VH1's list of the 100 Best Hard Rock Artists and #7 on MTV's list of the Best Metal Bands of All Time. Current band line-up: Axl Rose, Angus Young, Stevie Young, Chris Slade, Cliff Williams.
