Marquis Hill / concert

Chicago-based trumpeter, composer and bandleader Marquis Hill has gained international recognition for his ability to fuse jazz, hip-hop, R&B, neo-soul and Chicago house music, which he considers 'branches of the same tree'. His...

His artistry can be heard on albums such as Modern Flows Vol. II and The Way We Play, where he interprets jazz standards through the lens of contemporary influences. Hill's career took off after winning the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz competition in 2014, but he was already highly regarded for his original albums released under the Black Unlimited Music Group label.

Born in 1987, Hill grew up in a musical environment and excelled in Chicago jazz programmes before working with legends such as Fred Anderson and Von Freeman. He now lives in New York, but remains connected to Chicago, performing with the Blacktet band. Critics praise his innovative approach and respect for tradition, with DownBeat singling out his "fluid improvisation style". Over the years, he has collaborated with legends such as Marcus Miller, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joe Lovano and Makaya McCraven.

His latest album, Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox, is a tribute to the work of other artists, including the Chicago musicians he invited to collaborate.
